SkinPen® FAQs
The SkinPen® is part of the microneedling process, utilizing a set of very small needles which, when gliding across targeted tissues, will create tiny micro-injuries in the skin’s surface. These tiny punctures stimulate the body’s natural healing process, kick-starting the production of collagen and elastin. As the tissue heals, skin becomes stronger, tighter, and firmer. Fine lines, acne scars, and areas of hyperpigmentation are dramatically improved, as younger, fresher skin is formed.
Once you are comfortably situated in a Mirror Mirror Beauty Boutique treatment room, a topical anesthetic is placed on the skin. This process takes from 15 to 20 minutes. Once the skin is numb, the provider will gently glide the SkinPen® across the targeted skin, creating micro-injuries at the predetermined depth. Finally, a topical ointment or cream may be applied for optimal treatment results.
The microneedling technique is not considered painful. However, for total patient comfort, a topical anesthetic will be applied to the skin prior to treatment.

The ideal candidate for the SkinPen® will be someone in generally good health, who understands the microneedling treatment process. While the treatment is safe for all skin types and ethnicities, those with a skin infection or are pregnant may be asked to postpone their treatment.
Treatment with the SkinPen® will take less than an hour to perform, getting you out of the office in no time.
As soon as your SkinPen® treatment has been performed, the tissues will begin the repair process. The tissue’s collagen and elastin supplies will dramatically increase as the blood flow is revamped. Most patients will note dramatic improvements in one to two weeks, however the full benefits from treatment can continue to increase over the following six months.
Depending on the condition of your individual skin and the extent of correction desired, two to three SkinPen® sessions, spaced six to eight weeks apart, may be required for optimal results. Immediately after a SkinPen® treatment, the target area may be mildly red or pink, with minor swelling, similar to a light sunburn. In as little as 24 hours the skin will begin to heal and in less than four days, most side effects of the SkinPen® will begin to resolve.
While patients can return to work the same day as their SkinPen® micro-needling treatment, redness and mild swelling are common over the first several days. For this reason, you may decide to take the afternoon off, to let the healing process do its work rejuvenating the appearance.
The SkinPen® is an extremely safe treatment, with little chance for infection or scarring. When performed by a well-trained, aesthetic professional, patients can expect good results with little risk for serious complications. Redness, tissue swelling, and minor irritation are normal but will resolve in less than a week.
